Suicide is a problem that only gives one solution. Although suicide has taken many victims, there is no typical or stereotyped victim. On the other hand, there are many signs to help one prevent suicide.
If signs are picked up on early, then the risk of suicide can be reduced. Some common warning signs of a suicidal person include; they talk about it, have a drastic change in behavior, withdraws from socializing, has had recent severe losses, increased the use of drugs and alcohol, and loses the interest in personal appearance. If you recognize these problems then there is a process that many have found helpful.
The CARE approach is a four step process to help one approach a possible suicidal person. This process emphasizes the act of early recognition and need for an intervention as soon as possible. The first step is to check for signs of emotional illness, or any signs of depression, anger, or hostile behavior to others or themselves. The second step is to anticipate complications and be prepared for them. By knowing complications will occur, you will be able to respond to them quickly. The third step is remedy with early intervention. This is accepting and acknowledging that the problem exists and that it is urgent you address it. The last step is to educate your self. The more you know about the problem and what surrounds it, the better you can be prepared to prevent it.
If you are having suicidal thoughts, there are ways to help yourself as well. First you should distance yourself from anything that could contribute to your suicide such as guns, drugs, or any other item that may help harm yourself. Tell someone that you feel comfortable talking about this situation with and that you know cares about you. Avoid alcohol and drugs that can cause you to do things without fully thinking about them first. There are many things one can do to help themselves in this situation or others.
