Suicide may seem to some like a way out of a situation they are in. There are many statistics on suicide; here are just some from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Over 30,000 people commit suicide each year and 33,300 were reported in 2006 alone. A person dies from suicide every 16 minutes and at least someone tries every minute. While four men for every one woman actually completes the act, three times as many women try. Suicide is the fifth leading cause of death for children 5-14, but third when it come to 15-25 year olds.
With so many tragedies each year, you would think that there isn't that much information on suicide. The reality is quite the opposite. If you were to type the word suicide into any search engine, you would find an abundance of information. There are organizations that compile suicide statistics and others dedicated to the prevention and awareness. It is important that people thinking that the only way to end their suffering is to kill themselves get help. There are many resources available to help, either online or locally. If you know someone that you think has this problem, it is important that you talk to them about it and try to get them some help. Support them and make sure they know that you are there for them and that they aren't alone.
Many times people who try to commit suicide have other underlying problems, such as depression or some other chemical imbalance. With medication and treatment, many will feel much better and have a better handle on some of the things that life throws at them. It is important that they get diagnosed and treated as soon as possible.
