Depression affects everyone, regardless of race or age. There are more and more people dealing with depression because of the difficult economic times that are upon us. It's important to realize that it doesn't mean you are crazy or weak. It's a physical condition. Although there is no specific cause for depression, stress is an attributing factor. Stress can cause physical issues with the body's chemicals, therefore creating depression. It's important to recognize depression in the early stages and start treatment immediately.
It's okay to be sad every once in a while, but if it's happening more and more, this could be a sign of depression. Along with sadness, depression can make you feel lost and hopeless. You may stop participating in activities that you once enjoyed. The other signs are constant fatigue and difficulty concentrating. If you are experiencing any of these conditions on a regular basis, you need to schedule an appointment with your physician and do not be embarrassed to discuss it with him/her.
There are many treatments available for depression. You may need to take medication and no one needs to know if you do not want to make it public. It may take some time for the medication to work and you have to take it every day. While you are waiting on the medication to take effect, try to engage in some activities that you used to enjoy, even if you don't think or feel like doing them. Find someone to talk to or write your feelings in a journal. Another option is therapy. Don't despair, depression can be cured.
