When someone commits suicide, they take their own life. An astonishing number of people attempt or follow through with ending their lives through suicide. Fortunately, it is something that can be prevented.
There are signs that a person shows when they are suicidal, and it’s important to recognize these in order to try and prevent the act of suicide. They may make blatant remarks implying that they are going to take their own life. They may make continuous comments about death. They may purchase a weapon or stock up on potentially lethal medications. They may be either more withdrawn or much more outgoing. They may start to say farewell to those close to them and begin to give away their special belongings. Many times, a person will be involved in the use of illicit drugs and alcohol and put themselves into greater danger acting on risky behaviors such as driving while under the influence. Although men have a greater risk of dying from a suicide attempt, more women actually attempt suicide. Making a suicidal attempt can be devastating in itself, as it can lead to lifelong problems with health, mental status, and a person's overall self esteem.
If you know someone who is suicidal, it is important to discuss it with the person. You should make sure you get the appropriate help without leaving the person alone. Although someone suicidal may become hostile to you at the moment, they may thank you in the end for saving their lives.
