A Mental illness is a disease that usually onsets in the teens or early twenties, and even later but there is often a genetic predisposition toward the myriad of mental illnesses. It involves electro chemical aberrations (that affect thought) or a lowered amount of one or more neurotransmitters (dopamine, seratonin, norephidrine) that affect mood. There are also other mental illnesses that include panic disorders, anxiety, paranoia, personality disorders, etc.
The exact cause of mental illness has not yet been discovered but it is becoming very clear through research that many of these conditions are caused by a wide variety of genetic, biological, psychological and environmental factors. If diagnosed to be mentally ill don't worry because in most cases it's not the result of personal weakness.
Many mental illnesses are genetic so in this case the illnesses may be passed on from parents to children through genes. The way this works is that the function of each cell in the body is responsible for how we look, act, think, etc. Even if your mother or father have a mental illness that doesn't mean you will have one. Hereditary experts believe that a lot of mental problems come from multiple genes as this is the case with many diseases. That is why a person inherits a susceptibility to a mental disorder, but doesn't always develop the condition. Keep in mind that a person with an untreated mental illness often is unable to cope with life's daily routines and demands.
