Mental Health

Mental health covers a very broad range of illnesses and disorders such as anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, depression, panic disorder, stress disorder, schizophrenia, etc. Those mentioned are not anywhere near all of the mental diseases disorders or illnesses that mental health covers. Mental health is getting more attention and is taken more seriously today than it was even just a few years ago. Even though more mental disorders are being diagnosed and treated today than ever before, there is still so much to learn about mental health.

Mental disorders can affect everyone and anyone no matter what age. Treatments vary with the diagnosis and could include psychotherapies including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT,) light therapy, interpersonal therapy and dialectical behavior therapy to name a few. Different medications are used to treat different mental problems and some are specific to the illness or disorder.

Some very famous people have had mental illnesses for instance Vincent van Gogh, Ludwig Von Beethoven, Winston Churchill, Emily Dickinson, Robert Louis Stevenson and Sir Isaac Newton and that's just a few of the more famous people in history who have had some type of mental disorder or illness. Because of the stigma and stereotyping of mental illnesses, nearly two-thirds of all the people who could be helped do not admit to or seek treatment for mental health problems.

Mental Health America is helping to end the stigma of mental health conditions with public education and support for those with mental illnesses or disorders. They are working to improve the approach to mental health to a more just and humane society where people are given respect and dignity without stigma and prejudice.
