There are different types of depression: major depression, psychotic depression, dysthymic disorder, postpartum depression, and seasonal depression. Everyone has that time at some point where they feel depressed, but when it takes over, then it becomes a depression that can turn into a problem.
There are signs that point to clinical or major depression. Some of the signs might include sleeping too much or not enough and drastic changes in appetite. When depression gets worse, a person can begin to have negative feelings about everything and feel that nothing will ever go right, so life is not worth anything. When a person begins to feel this way, it is time to get help or they could slip to the point of being a suicide risk.
There is not one known cause of depression because one thing might trigger it in one person and something entirely different in someone else. Some of the factors which might cause depression would be alcohol or drugs, health problems, stressful situations, or even genetics. Statistics show that women show signs of depression more than men and one of the reasons this may be is because men will not admit to being depressed as quickly as women. But the risk of suicide in men who suffer from depression is higher than that of women.
Some of the things that can be done to help combat depression are to exercise, which will help you to sleep better, eat healthy, and have people around you that are supportive of what you are going through.
