Recovery Stories of People with Mental Illnesses

Mental illness, much like any physical illness, can be treated, and the person receiving the diagnosis can go on to lead a normal, productive life. Like physical conditions, mental issues can vary in severity and the amount and type of treatment needed.

Once a diagnosis has been made, one needs to work with their doctor or psychiatrist to determine the best mode of treatment. More often than not, treatment will consist of medication and talk therapy to help the person receiving the diagnosis learn how to deal with and work with issues that have very likely contributed to the diagnosis.

Mental illness can strike anyone of any age. It can often be easily treatable but it also can be an ongoing process for the person to follow, perhaps for the remainder of their life. Several famous examples of people who have been diagnosed with a mental illness include actresses Patty Duke and Carrie Fisher. Both Pattyvand Carrie have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder as well as newswoman, Jane Pauley. Actress Brooke Shields and newsman Mike Wallace both suffer from depression and have chosen to share their stories in the hopes of helping others see that there is life after a mental health diagnosis. This has helped diminish the stigma that once was so strongly felt by people with mental illnesses.

There can be a bright light at what is initially seen as a long, dark, empty tunnel. Find the treatment modality that works for you and enjoy your journey back to recovery. You are not alone.
