Overcoming a Mental Illness

There are many forms of mental illness. They can range from mild to severe. Most mental illnesses are related to stress. When life seems too hard to bear it can cause you to mentally do things you would not normally do. If it becomes too pressing it can lead to suicide.

The teen years are very difficult for many. If you see changes in your teen such as moodiness, withdrawing from family, withdrawing from their friends, spending too much time in their room alone, and becoming difficult to communicate with, you should seek help. Sometimes these feeling are brought on by rejection. Try to find out if some of their fellow students have shut them out. Kids can be cruel. Try to find out if they are being bullied on the way to school, on the school bus, in the cafeteria at lunch, at recess, or on the way home. Talk with the school counselor or their favorite teacher. They can be a great deal of help.

There is help available. The family can do many things to help the person before they get to the point where they need the help of a psychiatrist. If you are a religious family perhaps counseling with your pastor or priest would help. There are also mental health groups similar to AA where your child can talk freely to others who have experienced what they are going through.

There are medications that can help. Some doctors feel mental illness is caused because of a brain dysfunction. If it is there is medication that will help. It may take several to find out which works for your child but this situation can be corrected before they reach suicidal state of mind. Mental illness can be overcome with help.
