Controlling Stress

Current turbulent economic times are causing stress for all Americans. We all need a certain amount of pressure to do our best. It's when we feel we can't cope with the demands in our lives is when pressure becomes stress. If we don't deal with it, it can lead to anxiety and depression. There are many strategies we can use to deal with stress and move forward with our lives.

For example, make a plan of what you would do if you lost your job. Having a plan is a way to stay in control and feel less vulnerable. The most important thing you can do is to have a human connection and hold onto relationships. Talk things over with family and friends you can confide in. Join support groups and learn about things you can do for your situation that will work. Go to the source and get the facts right so that you won't worry over misinformation or rumors.

Don't abuse alcohol, smoking, or food. Eating right, getting enough exercise and sleep goes a long way in reducing stress. Ask yourself why you are feeling hopeless, angry, anxious, or panicky. What was it that made you feel that way or was it something you did? Answering these questions will help you look forward and make appropriate choices for positive changes in your life. See a psychologist or psychiatrist if you are overwhelmed by your emotions. If money matters are stressing you out, seek the advice of financial planners or credit counselors. Always know your limitations and don't take on too much. Take a break to relax and recharge, and remember that faith and meditation have also been shown to be major stress reducers.
