Keeping our children healthy is probably the number one priority in every parents life. And if it isn’t, it should be. We are all concerned if our child develops a fever or a cold or some other affliction, but how often are we concerned about their mental health? With all the drugs and alcohol and other peer pressure floating around in the world today, our children’s mental health becomes very important, to them and to us.
Child development is an important factor in diagnosing mental health disorders. Truly, all children develop at different rates. Some walk sooner than others, while others may talk at a younger age. As time goes on these children who are lagging behind will catch up to the others. It is when they don’t catch up, in a timely manner, that parents need to be concerned.
One worry with development issues is how one specific thing will effect another. If your child is depressed, the depression may effect his eating and sleeping habits, his school work, and even his interaction with his friends. When this is happening some help is needed, most likely from a professional. Don’t let the professional scare you with big words, parents, just ask them to explain what they mean so you can understand. It is not your fault, and you are not a bad parent if you can’t pick up on their very technical jargon, most of us can’t.
Children have a wonderful sense of survival. They also overcome adversity in ways that are a wonder to adults. So, don’t give up hope on your child, with all the love you can give him, and the professional help he needs, he will come out a much stronger more successful adult in the end.
