Types of Antidepressants

In the crowded mental health market of today, there are many different types of antidepressants, resulting from the different methodologies and practices which psychologists have for treating depression. A number of antidepressants exist, from drugs manufactured by pharmaceutical companies to natural alternatives.

The most common types of antidepressants prescribed to Americans currently are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). These drugs work by inhibiting the brain from returning the neurotransmitter serotonin back into neurons, effectively creating a larger stockpile of serotonin in the synapses. Supposedly, the preponderance of serotonin fights off depression. Examples of SSRIs include Zoloft and Prozac, the first and third most popularly prescribed antidepressants in the U.S. SSRIs are known to have a number of side effects, including insomnia and decreased sex drive, and decreased use of these drugs can even lead to withdrawal like symptoms. However, SSRIs are noted to be safer overall than previous generations of depressants, though, in some cases, they have also proven less effective.

Besides the prescribed medicine types of antidepressants, a number of natural alternatives are available to battle depression. For instance, St. John's wort is a popular herbal extract that has been used to treat depression. The plant can be grown around the world, and is especially popular in treatment of depression in European countries like Germany. Generally, St. John's wort is sold without a prescription, making it a more affordable antidepressant than most. Finally, studies have concluded that this herbal extract is generally more effective than placebos, and has relatively few side effects.

Other types of antidepressants include holistic methods, such as a lifestyle or dietary change. Certain foods are known to have beneficial effects on mood, and can be eaten in regular doses to improve mental health. Chocolate, for instance, is one such food. Spicy foods, such as chili peppers, are also known to produce a similar effect.
